Kerala Lottery Terms Explained

Lottery name and code: Each weekly lottery has a name and a two-letter code printed on the ticket and in the result: Karunya (KR), Karunya Plus (KN), Sthree Sakthi (SS), Bhagyathara (BT), Dhanalekshmi (DL), Suvarna Keralam (SK), Samrudhi (SM). Bumpers use codes such as BR or TB.
Draw number: The running number of a draw within its lottery, such as KR-768. Draw numbers continue in sequence week after week and never restart, so they identify a result uniquely. Old lotteries kept their sequence until they were discontinued.
Series: The two letters before the six digits on a ticket, for example the "KA" in KA 123456. Roughly a dozen series are printed for each draw, so the same six-digit number exists once in every series. The first letter usually matches the lottery.
Ticket number: The six-digit number after the series. Together with the series it forms the full ticket number that must match for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.
First prize (ഒന്നാം സമ്മാനം): The top prize, ₹1 crore for weekly draws, paid to one full ticket number. The result prints the town where the winning ticket was sold in brackets, for example "(PATTAMBI)".
Consolation prize (സമാശ്വാസ സമ്മാനം): Paid to tickets in every other series that carry the same six digits as the first prize. With twelve series there are eleven consolation winners, usually ₹5,000 each.
Ticket ending / last four digits: For the 4th to 9th prizes only the last four digits are drawn. The result lists these under "for the tickets ending with the following numbers". Every ticket, in any series, whose number ends in those digits wins that prize.
Prize tier: One level of prize: 1st, consolation, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th to 9th. A weekly result has ten tiers; bumpers have more. If a ticket qualifies for more than one, the higher prize is paid.
Gorky Bhavan: The Kerala State Lotteries auditorium near Bakery Junction, Thiruvananthapuram, where every draw is conducted at 3:00 PM (2:00 PM for many bumpers) in public.
Official result / Gazette: The department publishes a PDF of each result the same afternoon and later notifies it in the Kerala Government Gazette. Only the official result is legally valid; this site transcribes it and links to the PDF.
Agent and agent code: A person or shop licensed by a District Lottery Office to sell tickets. The agent code starts with the district letter (T for Thiruvananthapuram, E for Ernakulam, D for Kozhikode and so on) followed by a number. Check one with the agent code checker.
Retailer / sub-agent: A seller who buys tickets from an agent and sells them to the public, often from a small stall. Retailers pay prizes up to ₹5,000 like agents do.
District Lottery Office: The department's office in each of the 14 districts. It issues agencies, accepts prize claims above ₹5,000 and handles complaints. Addresses and phone numbers are on the offices page.
Directorate of State Lotteries: The head office at Vikas Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram, which pays the largest prizes and runs the lottery. Regional offices in Ernakulam and Kozhikode assist it.
Claim period: The time allowed to surrender a winning ticket: 90 days from the draw date, as printed on the official result. Late claims are rejected.
TDS (tax deducted at source): Income tax of 30%, plus surcharge and cess, deducted from prizes above ₹10,000 before payment under section 194B of the Income Tax Act. The winner receives the net amount.
Agent commission: A 10% share deducted from prizes above ₹5,000 and paid to the agent who sold the winning ticket, in addition to the sales commission on every ticket.
Bumper (ബംപർ): A seasonal lottery with a higher ticket price and much larger prizes: Christmas New Year, Summer, Vishu, Monsoon, Thiruvonam (Onam) and Pooja bumpers. See bumper results.

Result chart: A table of the top three prize numbers of many draws in one view; see the result chart.
Guessing numbers: Predictions of winning numbers sold or published by third parties. Draws are random and no prediction method works; this site does not publish guessing numbers.
Bhagyakuri (ഭാഗ്യക്കുറി): The Malayalam word for lottery, used in the department's official Malayalam name, Kerala Samsthana Bhagyakuri.
