The Christmas New Year Bumper is one of six bumper lotteries the Kerala State Lotteries department runs each year, alongside the , Summer Bumper, Vishu Bumper, Monsoon Bumper, Thiruvonam Bumper, Pooja Bumper. Bumpers are timed to festivals and seasons, in this case January, and tickets go on sale several weeks in advance across all 14 districts. Because of the higher ticket price, the prize pool is far larger than a weekly draw: the first prize alone has reached ₹20 Crore, and bumper draws typically pay several second and third prizes, one per series, plus consolation and ending prizes down to ₹500.

Bumper draws are held at Gorky Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram, usually at 2:00 PM, and the result is published the same day. Winning tickets of ₹5,000 or less are paid by agents; higher prizes are claimed through a bank or the Directorate of State Lotteries within 90 days, with tax deducted at source. Because bumper first prizes are large, winners are advised to approach the Directorate directly with the signed ticket and identity documents.
